How to Prepare UPSC Maths Optional for IAS, IFoS(IFS), Civil Services Mains Exams.

1.     HOW TO PREPARE UPSC MATHS OPTIONAL?

The Civil Services Examination, the creme de la creme of all examinations, is also known for being the toughest and the longest examination in India. Every UPSC aspirant faces a very testing decision while choosing the right optional subject for their exam. A general thumb rule is that one should take the subject in which he/she has some academic background and genuine interest. There are other factors too, like the past performance of the subject in UPSC, time frame required to prepare the subject, contribution of the subject towards General Studies syllabus, and coaching available in the subject should also be considered while deciding the Optional Subject.

Here, it is to be noted that Mathematics is very scoring optional along with predictability in scores over multiple attempts. Mathematics is considered as a lengthy optional but if one has a reasonable hold over the topics already covered during graduation then it is not that long to cover the syllabus. The other benefits of taking mathematics are that it has a well-balanced and static syllabus. Most colleges of India cover the syllabus in the initial years. The syllabus is also well structured and balanced with an emphasis on theorems and their proofs as well as the application part. It also has High Objectivity and hence is Scoring.

The basic requirement for taking mathematics as an optional subject is for the aspirant to have studied Mathematics in his/her graduation. Mathematics only till class 12th as a subject is not enough for UPSC Mains, no matter how well one had performed before in school. Moreover, the most important factor which one should consider while selecting Mathematics is the interest, he/she has in the subject. The syllabus is vast and intricate. The concepts are related, and one must have passion for the subject to clear the exam. His/her should be willing to practice different types of problems simultaneously. The subject may seem a bit daunting if one is particularly not fond of the subject or is too scared to practice the subject.

After going through the syllabus once, the trick is to practice past year questions (PYQ) extensively. Paper 1 is considered to be much simpler as topics such are Calculus, Differential Equations, Analytical Geometry, etc. are easier to master. Paper 2 however has topics like Algebra, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, etc. which need more practice and concentration.

Having said that, a good strategy for covering mathematics could be trying to go through the entire syllabus first in about 2 to 3 months. The aspirant should devote long hours of study every day and make concise notes by consolidating-

a.         Important theorems and facts,

b.         By taking examples for those problems which are important (like PYQ) or which illustrates some difficult concept clearly, or which require the usage of multiple concepts.

c.         Important counterexamples as they are sometimes asked in papers.

Another important point to be kept in mind is that the notes should not have repetitive examples, random facts, examples, or any internet material content that could be just found which would be unlikely to help in solving the paper. Revision of the formulae is very important. If there is any formula that you are forgetting, then this is the time to memorize it. This should take about 15 days or so.

Even after all the above-mentioned preparation, there will be a few topics that one will not be comfortable with. One can here refer to books at this stage for these specific sub-topics. Books have a variety of examples; one must not fall into the trap of solving all examples but only those which he/she may feel important enough to come in the examination. Looking at the PYQ papers, one can observe that only a few problems are somewhat tricky and even most of them can be done without any special practice from these books with a slight application of the concept.

However, depending solely on any one subject would be hedging your preparation. Mathematics has the ability to fetch good marks, but it is the whole composite mark that counts finally. Therefore, allotting adequate time to each subject would do justice to your preparation. Also, Mathematics is not like GS where one reads a topic and simultaneously summarizes it in notes. One should first finish the subtopic, practice the problems, proofs, etc. and then one will realize what should actually come in notes.
